WDCS, the Whale and Dolphin Conservation Society is delighted to
be part of the Cape
Cod Whale Trail. The WDCS whale, a sperm whale, was unveiled
on May 22 at the Four Points Sheraton hotel in Hyannis, MA. We are
delighted to have worked on this project with Coco Larrain who lives
on the Cape. The result is truly amazing as you can see from the
attached
photos. The WDCS whale will be located on Nantucket pier May
through September before being auctioned at the “All’s Well that
Ends Whale” gala event held on September 23rd again at the Four
Points Sheraton. Bidding is open to the public starting May 29th
and is open to all members of the public – details can be found
at http://capeandislands.thewhaletrail.com/auction.asp.
The theme of the WDCS whale, Stop, Protect, Connect represents the
three main areas of the work WDCS undertakes both in the US and
world-wide –
Stop – addressing such issues as whaling, drive hunts and entanglements
in fishing gear as well as other threats such as climate change,
noise, ship strikes and the growing stress placed on the marine
environment by humans.
Protect – funding over 40 research projects world-wide, working
with and through such organizations as the Convention on Migratory
Species on ground breaking scientific research to develop a growing
body of data that can be used to influence changes that positively
benefit whales and dolphins.
Connect – working on education and outreach program’s to provide
marine mammal guides, developing whale watch guidelines, providing
appropriate training and support to whale operators and naturalists
as well as visiting schools with our very own inflatable right whale.
We are creating a place on our web-site where you can upload your
pictures of the WDCS whale and also give us any comments you may
have .
