For the next two months, climate scientists at Oxford University
are calling on members of the public to help run the world's largest
ever climate experiment. WDCS fully supports this groundbreaking
initiative to try and predict the world’s future climate.
The interactions between the factors involved in the model – air
temperature, cloud cover and sea temperature need a huge number
of calculations to take place. One solution is for scientists
to use the largest supercomputer available - but even the biggest
supercomputers are only partially effective for this task. Using
a technique known as distributed computing, the scientists are
hoping to harness the power of thousands of PCs around the world.
If 10,000 people take part, the model will be faster than even
the world’s biggest computer could perform. The results will be
broadcast on BBC channels in May. To find out more visit: http://www.bbc.co.uk/sn/hottopics/climatechange/
